WHERE YOU CAN BE INVOLVED IN

Demonstration Gardens

The goal of demonstration gardens is to improve food security at the household level while helping vulnerable groups in rural communities to generate income and enhance the nutrition status of children and pregnant women. LifeCare Malawi trains vulnerable small-scale and subsistence farmers to grow fruits and vegetables for food and income generation. LCMF conducts hands on-training in food farming and provides farm inputs such as fertilizers, water canes, hoes, water pipes, and other farming equipment. Further LCMF assists farmers package the farm products and to identify established markets at schools and supermarkets for sell of excess produce. LCMF has 6 demonstration gardens at TA Ntchema in Chiradzulu District and at TA Nkando in Mulanje District. So far, we have reached 480 farmers (331 female and 149 male). Our target is to reach 1,000 farmers in each of the 6 targeted districts. LCMF intends increase the distribution of farm inputs including seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. LCMF is also promoting kitchen gardens.

Maternal Child Health Programs

LCMF identifies and trains women Community Health Volunteers who serve as the key point of contact for pregnant women in the rural communities. The volunteers are trained to detect and refer pregnant mothers at risk to the hospital, at the same time ensuring that the pregnant mothers are accessing all health care services during antenatal (ANC) and postnatal (PNC) period.

HIV-AIDS Prevention, Testing, and Counseling.

LCMF has plans to establish and equip HIV Voluntary Testing and Counseling Centers in selected rural communities in the targeted LCMF Districts. These will incorporate the Young Mother Group program, which promotes healthy life skills among vulnerable girls and teenage mothers. LCMF will also offer youth friendly health service programs that teach youths about sexual and reproductive health issues, sporting activities, community Dramas, through its Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Technologies program.

Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

LCMF helps communities build capacity for sustainable water conservations and harvesting. We ensure that communities we are serving have access to portable safe and clean water. We provide empty drums for harvesting rain water, irrigation pumps, buckets, and water purification chemicals. This program helps reduce sexual abuse and assaults on girls who are attacked while fetching water due to long distances. LCMF is involved in tree planting in rural communities. We have tree nurseries where we plant trees and grass and distribute them to local farmers. We have also constructed dams for water harvesting. Our plan is to increase tree planting activities and build capacity for rain water harvesting and build more water harvesting dams.
